Grass-fed Beef

I’m not an animal person.  But, when my dad died suddenly in February 2008, I found myself with about 60 cows on my hands.  I'd been trying to talk my dad into raising grass-fed beef for quite some time.  Now, it was up to me.

After letting the shock of dad's death settle, I began reading everything I could find on raising grass-fed beef.  I finally happened upon Joel Salatin's book, Salad-Bar Beef.  This is the model with which I walk slowly forward.  My oldest son Brandon helps care for the cows and together we continue to learn as all the beef cattle are now grass-fed.

There are benefits to raising cattle strictly on pasture, including beef that is higher in omega-3's and lower in saturated fat.  For further information regarding the benefits to grass-fed beef, read our hand-out, Healthy Benefits in Grass-fed Beef.

Large quantities of hay are raised right here on the farm with no chemical inputs in the form of herbicides, pesticides or fungicides.  Part of the beauty of ample pastures, is the ability to bale the grasses after the heavy spring growth to feed the cattle through the winter.

I invite you to try Grass-fed Black Angus beef from Salem Road Farms.  Currently, all cuts of beef are available at Clear Creek Food Co-op in Richmond, Indiana and at Oxford Farmers’ Market Uptown in Oxford, Ohio.  We strive towards on-farm beef sales with the completion of our market stand.  This delectable beef is also available at certain times of the year as halves or split-halves.  See the Freezer Beef Order Form for more information.

Thanks for your continuous support as I seek to offer your family healthy and nutritious grass-fed beef.  Suzie.
